| This afternoon, around 3pm, a few hours after the new Engine 132 was placed in-service; the Peekskill Fire Department was dispatched to a residential fire alarm on Paulding Street. While enroute, crews were updated that there were multiple zone alarms activated in the building. This alarm marked the first call for the new engine.
First arriving units arrived to be quickly advised by the building occupants, that there was an active fire in the basement, with two pet canines still in the residence. Members confirmed an active fire in the basement of a private dwelling. 2344 (Duty Lieutenant) transmitted a 10-75, bringing additional resources to the scene. 2341 (Chief) arrived on scene and assumed command.
The fire was extinguished within minutes of arrival, crews conducting primary searches of the building located two dogs, that were safely removed from the building and reunited with their family. The cause of the fire was ruled accidental, determined to be caused by a malfunction of a charging E-bike battery. No injuries were reported and all units returned to service by 6pm.
Due to the involvement of a Lithium-ion battery powered device, a number of extra steps had to be taken to ensure the property was left in a safe condition. The E-bike battery remnants were packed into a container designed for battery containment. The battery parts were then transported off-site to a hazardous materials recovery facility, by fire department personnel.
